William A. Smith, age 92, of Belleville passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on May 19, 1922 to his parents William and Nettie Mae (Knutson) Smith in the Town of Caledonia near Baraboo, WI. Bill graduated from Wisconsin High School and then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. On April 9, 1949 he was united in marriage to Ethel Grunnet at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oregon. Bill as a mechanic at Gisholt, City View, and the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Brooklyn Lutheran Church. Bill was very involved in local activities he was a long time ticket taker at Belleville High School Athletic Events and the Community Picnic. He also worked the pass gate for UW Athletic Events at the Fieldhouse and Camp Randall. Bill was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Zor Shrine, and Duppler-Smith American Legion Post #460. He was very proud to have flown on the Badger Honor Flight to Washington D.C. Bill is survived by his sons; Bruce (Ellen) Smith, Bill (Mary) Smith, and Brian (Juliana) Smith, daughters; Barbara Smith, Beverly Burrows, Beth (Jeff) Buesser, Betty Carlson, and Brenda Smith, eighteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ethel, a daughter Evelyn Marie, sons-in-law Glen Burrows on August 14, 2014, and son-in-law David Carlson. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Brooklyn Lutheran Church, 101 Second St., Brooklyn, WI 53521 with Pastor Rebecca Ninke officiating with burial in the East Dayton Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI. An order of the Eastern Star Memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. preceding the visitation and a Masonic service will be held at 8:00 p.m. at the end of the visitation.
