IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rodger H.
Moe
September 24, 1938 – March 11, 2025
Rodger Harold Moe died on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg surrounded by loved ones. He was born on September 24, 1938 and married his high school sweetheart, Judith Rose Heiking, on June 2, 1962. He had two children, Wendy and Heidi Moe and two granddaughters, Abigail and Hailey Sullivan. He is survived by his brother, James Moe, and his companion, Rhita Searles; brother-in-law, Levi Snyder, nieces; and nephews. Rodger was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Elda (Beahm) Moe, sisters Patricia Snyder and Barbara Schlak, and granddaughter Kailie Cherie Sullivan.
After graduating from Elroy High School, he attended UW La Crosse, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Science and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction at UW Madison. At 22, he started his teaching job at Belleville High School. As he walked the halls on his first day, a student questioned "Who's the new kid wearing a suit?" For the next 38 years, he taught Social Studies/Civics, Geography, History, Driver's Ed, and Science. While at BHS, he held various titles: attendance coordinator, safety coordinator, student council advisor, and letterman's club advisor, and was promoted to Assistant Principal then Principal until his retirement. He was dedicated to the students, school, and community. Rodger was often approached by former students who wanted to share their fond memories of his caring, patience, and understanding along with laughter-filled moments in the drivers ed car.
He oversaw the addition to the current high school in 1987, was an active member of the Community Club, Trustee of the Belleville Public Library, and volunteered his time organizing and serving chicken dinners at the Belleville Community Picnic. Last year, he was inducted into the Wildcat Wall of Fame for his contributions to the school district.
Rodger loved fishing with his father, dancing with his wife Judy, deer hunting with his brother Jim, and playing horseshoes. In winter, he enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. In summer, he enjoyed family camping trips to visit his favorite historic landmarks in South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming (with the theme song of Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again"). He also enjoyed their summer home-away-from-home at Sky High Campground -- relaxing with a book in his hand and Judy by his side. Rodger never turned down a game of cribbage; and as for Euchre, he and Judy were hard to beat! He tried pheasant hunting with his dog, Ginger, but she liked to run away. In a rush to catch her, he'd hop on his daughters' banana seat bike and chase her through town. Later, his cat, Gertie, became his loyal companion and spent many years snuggling on his lap. If you needed a pocketknife, a handkerchief (ironed, of course, by Judy), or a flashlight, he had them in his pockets ready to go. If you think Rodger could pass a Dairy Queen or Culvers without getting an ice cream treat, you'd be mistaken; and for that, his family was always delighted and thankful. He was also known to have chocolate bars and treats ready for his granddaughters and grand-dogs.
Forever cherished as Grampy/Gramps/Pop-Pop, each Christmas he treated his granddaughters by giving them a large jar of change, which he collected all year long. A perpetual educator, this gift included homework since they had to count the change, which they used to shop for Christmas gifts for family.
