Obituary

Maroa Jean "Micki" Wasson, age 90, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2025 at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Madison.  She was born on July 26, 1935 outside Minneapolis, MN the daughter of Norman and Alice (Heffelfinger) Tracy.  After graduating from South High School Micki continued her education at the University of Minnesota earning a teaching degree.  She began teaching high school physical education at her alma mater and then began working for the YWCA.  During this time Micki was known for her adventurous spirit, leading canoe trips in the Boundary Waters and Quetico, riding horses, and traveling to Colorado.   At a conference for the directors of the YWCA and YMCA, she met James Hubert Wasson. They would later marry and Micki moved to join James in Wichita, KS where she was the program director for Camp Wood.  After James accepted the position as Executive Director for the South Shore YMCA in Milwaukee, the couple moved to Brookfield, WI where they raised their children and resided for over 16 years.  In Brookfield Micki became a Montessori teacher.   She also owned and operated a studio in her home, teaching young children the fundamentals of reading, music, and gymnastics.  In 1988 Maroa and James retired to Rayville, MO near Kansas City on a tree farm they named Sycamore Creek.  They would spend their summers working at Camp Chief Ouray near Granby, CO.  Around 2008, Maroa moved to New Glarus to be closer to her family.  In her later years she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren, activities at home, and knitting slippers for her friends and church family.

Maroa is survived by her daughter Lynn LaRee Boomer, and her children Zach, Galena, Jackson, and Johnny Mack Boomer, her son Winton Lann Wasson, and her daughter Ann Dunkin, and her children Nikki, Tracy, Jesse, and Kristin.  She is further survived by her brother Dean Tracy, sister-in-law Doris Tracy, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, and brothers Harmon and Norman Tracy.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at the New Glarus Bible Church, 207 Sixth St., New Glarus, WI.  A gathering of relatives and friends will precede the memorial service from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.
