Obituary

Frederick G. Baker, age 72, passed away in the loving arms of his family on Friday, March 30, 2012 at his home. He was born on September 9, 1939 to his parents Rudy and Emma (Redell) Baker in Madison, WI. Fred attended Oregon Schools, and then entered the United States Navy in 1956 as part of the silent service aboard the SS-242 Bluegill Submarine. On December 17, 1965 he was united in marriage to Judi McDermott. Fred worked for Bob White Candy and the Wisconsin Cheeseman Company as a kitchen supervisor. He was very proud of his family son Jim (Martha) Baker and daughter Julie (Jim) Hallingstad and their accomplishments, and especially his grandchildren Irene and John whom he adored. His children would call him on a daily basis to check in and see what he had done that day and tell him they loved him for all the guidance, advice, and love he'd shown them. Fred was a very humble and private person. He was very content to stay "On the Hill" at home reading a good book, sharing his time with his Mastiff, Duke, deer hunting with his son, lifting weights, and biking. Playing Jack Benny was always a way of life to him. He enjoyed each day of life to its fullest. Fred enjoyed being out in the woods, taking a walk, and listening to talk radio and his Ipod. He had been an avid runner most of his life and ran the Boston Marathon in 1982. Fred also enjoyed canoeing in Wisconsin with his wife Judi in the wood strip canoes he had built. Fred is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He is further survived by a sister Lois (Ted) Klade, a brother John Baker, brothers-in-law Pat Calabrese and Ken Kenzie, sister-in-law Virginia Baker, and Judi's family Jeanette (Bob) McCullick, Jeraldine (Bob) Ihm, Joanne (David) Hollis, Donna McDermott, Janice Schulz, Juanita (Walter) Anderson, Ian Campbell, June Frick, Bob (Kathy) McDermott, Ron (Diane) McDermott, and many wonderful nieces and nephews who called to check on uncle Fred during the last two weeks. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James and Rodney Baker, sisters Bette Calabrese and Bev Kenzie, brothers-in-law Tom McIntyre, Gerald Schulz, John Frick, Roger McDermott, and sisters-in-law Jane Campbell and Joyce McIntyre. Per Fred's wishes, he would prefer you to remember him by planting a tree, or making a donation in his memory to Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. in regard for all of the outstanding care, help, and support they have given his family during the past two weeks following his stroke, or his favorite charity the Green County Humane Society. Our lives were enriched by knowing each one of them. Many thanks are also given to the doctors and staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Dr. Okada, and the 7th floor Neurology staff for their compassionate care, you were all Angels. Thank you to sister-in-law Janice Schulz who was there for us and neighbors Tracey and Brian Meyer, Andy Beal of the Becker-Beal Funeral Home in Belleville, and the Brooklyn EMS.
