Obituary

Emma Disch, age 98, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Oregon Manor. She was born on December 27, 1911 to her parents John S. and Mary Rhyner in the Town of Brooklyn. Emma attended the Gill School. On December 25, 1937 she was united in marriage to Edwin O. Disch at the Swiss Reformed Church Parsonage in Belleville, where she was a member. Following their marriage Edwin and Emma purchased the home farm where she had been born. The couple expanded the farm crop land to supply feed to their dairy herd. Milking those cows was primarily Emma's job, while Edwin worked the land. She considered them, "her" cows. The neighboring farmers always remarked that Emma was always the first to start the day; she had the first barn lights to go on. She worked quickly and efficiently at everything she did. She tended to a large vegetable garden to feed her family, planting her garden on the same plot of land her mother had. Emma maintained her garden into her 90's. She was usually followed by a parade of barn cats and sometimes the neighbor's dog while she tended her garden. Emma proudly used the riding mower to mow her lawn, usually at a speed that concerned her family and neighbors. During winters, she kept busy doing needlework, embroidery, and quilting until her failing eyesight forced her to stop. An avid reader, she read and re-read her collection of books. Emma cared for people all of her life. It was important to her to be useful; the frailties of old age were frustrating for her. She always placed the needs of other before her own. Emma is survived by her two sons Paul Disch of New London, WI and John Disch of Albany, WI, two daughters Joyce (Norman) Moyer of Colorado Springs, CO and Barbara (Harley) Stokstad of Oregon, WI, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin on May 16, 2000, a sister Margaret Schultz, and a half-sister Barbara Fristad. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the First United Church of Christ, 130 E. Church St, Belleville, WI with the Rev. Heide Walker-Hackman officiating with burial in the Mt. Hope/Brooklyn Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the First United Church of Christ in Belleville. The family would like to thank the staff of the Oregon Manor for their loving care and concern.
