Obituary

Elaine Virginia Barlow (Zweifel) passed away on March 2, 2010 of complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease. Elaine was born on October 12, 1921 in New Glarus, WI the oldest child of Wilbert and Norma Zweifel. She grew up in New Glarus, graduating from high school in 1939. She then attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she was selected a "Badger Beauty" and was the first female in the marching band. She later transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she earned both a Bachelors Degree in education and a Masters Degree in library science. An award winning educator, she taught for many years in the Fox Point-Bayside school district and later as a tutor and mentor to students with special needs. After retirement she moved with her husband to Dallas, Texas and later returned to New Glarus in 1992; in 2007 she moved to Wauwatosa and then last year to Mequon. A lifelong member of the Swiss United Church of Christ, she also was enrolled in the Order of the Eastern Star. To the end, Elaine's love of children was always evident and her greatest joy was in helping others; a real lady in every sense, her sweet smile, gentle spirit and loving touch will be missed but always remembered by everyone who knew her. Elaine is survived by her son, W.P. "Buz" Barlow, Jr. of Dallas, Texas and her beloved grandchildren, Ashley (Adam) Prescott Barlow-Thompson of Chicago, IL and Matt of Waukesha; also a sister, Jean Adams of Madison and brother, John "Chuckie" Zweifel of New Glarus. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 55 years, Wallace P. "By" Barlow and her sister Lou Ann Christensen of Arvada, Colorado. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI. Pastors Ashley Prescott Barlow-Thompson and Adam Barlow-Thompson will officiate with burial in Highland Cemetery in Monticello. Relatives and friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
