Donald E. Smith, age 90, of New Glarus passed away on Friday, October 07, 2016 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on April 1, 1926 at Mokena, IL to his parents Martin and Marie (Paschke) Smith. Donald served in the United States Army in Germany from 1953 to 1955. Following his time in the service he returned to Illinois to farm near Frankfort. On July 29, 1972 he was united in marriage to June Newman at Joliet, IL. Don was a lifelong farmer and steward of the land. In his later years he remained active by providing his wisdom to continue the legacy of the family business in agriculture. Don and June enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Don had a deep faith in eternal life and love of others. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist. Don's family and grandchildren were very important to him and he cherished their time together.

Don is survived by his son Mark (Laura) Smith of New Glarus, WI, grandchildren Annelisa, Alaina, Elizabeth, and Sophia. He is further survived by his nephews Ronald (Barbara) Smith of Monticello, WI and Greg (Deborah Krauss) Smith of Monroe, WI, and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife June, and brother and sister-in-law Gordon (Barbara) Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main St., Verona, WI with Pastor Kurt Billings officiating. Inurnment services will be in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elmwood, IL.

A gathering of relatives and friends will precede the memorial service from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Verona.

A memorial fund has been established.
