Donald G. Getter passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011 at HospiceCare Inc. in Fitchburg after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. Donald "Don" was born on July 5, 1938 in Viroqua, WI to Pearl and Nina (Appleman) Getter, the eighth of nine children. He attended Viroqua schools, graduating from high school in 1956. While still in high school he enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, serving from June 1955 to August 1962. Following high school he attended barbering school in Minneapolis for a year, then moved to Madison where he began his barbering career. On November 29, 1958 he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Froiland, also from Viroqua. Three daughters, Kathi, Linda and Lisa were born in the next five years. Don has enjoyed a variety of careers and avocations as a barber, Motor Vehicle Inspector for the WisDOT; Trucking Regulations Investigator for the USDOT; office and house cleaner and handyman. His hobbies have included playing racquetball and golf, sailing, woodworking and traveling. He is survived by siblings Harold Getter of Phoenix, AZ; Bernel Getter of India; Verna Mary (Carl) Anderson of Sun City, AZ; Myron "Stub" (Harriet) Getter of Minneapolis, MN; Harland (Jean) Getter of Holmen, WI; Janice (Arlo) Parmly of Viroqua, WI; and Patsy (John) Ninilchik, AK. He is also survived by his precious and beloved wife, Mary; his daughters, Kathi (Dennis) Seman, of Cottage Grove, WI, Linda Hammes of Madison, WI, and Lisa Zimmerman of Janesville, WI; grandchildren Jenna, Brian and Jason Zimmerman, Kyle and Derek Hammes, Abbie and Christie Seman; and great-grandchild Lilie Latona-Hammes. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, to whom he was affectionately known as "Uncle Donnie". He is preceded in death by his parents, and older sibling Delores "Tootie" Lindquist. A memorial service for Don will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Westwood Christian Church, 5210 Odana Rd., in Madison. Friends may also visit from 1:00 to 1:45 the same day. Interment will take place in Viroqua at a later date. Gifts in honor of Don may be made to either HospiceCare Inc. or the American Cancer Society.
