Delmar N. Zentner, age 91, of New Glarus passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at the New Glarus Home. He was born on August 19, 1923 to his parents Nicholas and Alma (Legler) Zentner on the family farm in Legler Valley. Delmar graduated from New Glarus High School and was a lifelong dairy farmer. On August 23, 1942 he was united in marriage to Betty Frye at the East Blue Mounds Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Swiss United Church of Christ in New Glarus and former member of the New Glarus School District Board. For most of his life the first thing Delmar did every morning was milk the cows, and most every day was a good day. He happily whistled while he milked and did chores, and always greeted his children at the breakfast table with a cheery good morning! His very Swiss, independent nature thrived living the life of a farmer. Delmar loved and respected the land, the animals and his family, and diligently worked to provide for all. Whether he was harvesting a crop, driving a school bus, or supporting his children and grandchildren in their endless endeavors, he approached life events with resolve, patience, and gratitude. It was these characteristics that allowed him to successfully evolve in all his professional and personal roles and remain so young at heart. Delmar was a voracious reader and had a passion for traveling, but one of his most favorite pleasures was dancing. He met the love of his life at the "Hotel" on New Year's Eve 1940 and they enjoyed dancing together forever more. Delmar is survived by his wife Betty; children Cheryl (Robert) Bergum, Julie (Jerry) Landmark, Holly (Charles) Carnes, Roderick (Pat) Zentner, Valla (Larry Rufenacht) Zentner, and Debby (Jay) Schneider; grandchildren Anna (Steve Elliot) Landmark, Katie (Scott) McIlvanie, Jaclyn (Luke) Steel, Kevin Schneider, Kyle (Calli King) LaFond, Ryan (Holly) LaFond, Nicholas, William, and Taylor Carnes; great-grandchildren Alice and Harrison Elliot. He is further survived by a sister Kathleen (Ingwell) Elmer. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Marion S. Streiff, brothers-in-law Clayton Streiff, Harold Ingwell, and Arthur Elmer, and a grandson Ben Bergum. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 with the Rev. Gary Streiff officiating at the New Glarus Home Chapel, 600 Second Ave., New Glarus, WI (access via the Elm Dr. entrance). A gathering of relatives and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the New Glarus Home Chapel.
